The Roles of ZNA
Primary Role: To defend Zimbabwe’s territorial integrity, is sovereignty and jealously guard its independence from would be aggressors.
Secondary Roles: To render Military Assistance to Civil Power, Civil Ministries and Civil Authorities. Operations falling under this category include Border Control Operations, Guarding of Key Points and assisting in community based projects.
The ZNA also contributes to regional and international peace and security through multilateral organisations such as SADC, AU and UN.
Past regional deployments include the Mozambique Campaign (1982-1992) and DRC Campaign (Operation Sovereign Legitimacy) (1998-2002).
International deployments under UN Peacekeeping missions include Angola-UNAVEM (19888-1997) and Somalia-UNOSOM (1991-1992).
UN military observer missions have been undertaken in Rwanda (1993-1996, Liberia (2000-2012) and Nepal (2007-2011). Currently, the ZNA officers are deployed in the Sudan, South Sudan, Cote d’lvoire and Ethiopia under AU/UN Military Observer Missions.
