
After the realisation that there were some ZNAmembers and their dependants who needed assistance from time to time, the organisation established the Army Charity Race in 1997 as a vehicle to fundraise for the organisation’s five charities. These are T sanga Lodge Convalescent Centre, the ZNA Benevolent Fund, the ZNA Widows and Orphans Fund, the ZNA Schools Welfare Trust Fund and the ZNA Patients Fund.
Tsanga Lodge Convalescent Centre: A rehabilitation centre for the Defence Forces situated in the Eastern Highlands.
ZNA Widows and Orphans Fund: The Fund helps widows of the deceased members especially during the period when terminal benefits are being processed.
ZNA Schools Welfare Trust Fund: The Fund maintains existing Army Schools and develops new ones, for the benefit of children attending Army schools within the cantonment and surrounding areas.This Trust was launched by the President and Commander in Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces in the year 2000
Army Patients Welfare Fund: The Fund is meant to cater for hospitals, hospitalized and sick at home members through the provision of basic needs such as toiletries and other goodies.
ZNA Benevolent Fund: The Fund caters for the welfare of the troops on operational commitments such as demining and boarder control operations.
FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES
2. The ZNA Charities conducts the following fundraising activities:
a. The ZNA Charity Horse Race. Established in 1997, the ZNA Charity Horse Race was for a long time a major fundraising vehicle for the Army Charities. The Race is held under the stauspices of Mashonaland Turf Club at the Borrowdale Race Course in October and this year will mark the 21 edition of the Charity Horse Race. Over and above the horse racing, a number of activities like Raffle Draws, kids entertainment and musical entertainment at the main arena also take place. The event is a fun packed family day for everyone to enjoy. Delta Beverages are the major partners for the Charity Horse Race.
b. The Commander ZNA Charities Ball. The Charities Ball is a fundraising Dinner hosted by the Commander of the Army mainly targeting Corporates. The Dinner is held in Harare, and for the previous two editions was held at Zimbali Gardens in Greendale. An average of 600 guests are invited (60 tables) with a table of ten costing $1500.00. The Charities Ball is a major fundraising vehicle for the Army Charities and is traditionally held during the first quarter of the year.
c. The Bulawayo Charities Dinner Dance and Golf T ournament. These two events give the ZNA Charities a national outlook as it affords corporates and individuals from the Southern Region an opportunity to contribute to the Charities cause. They are normally held back to back (that is Dinner Dance on Friday and Golf T ournament on Saturday) in the first week of September. The Golf T ournament is organised in conjunction with Bakers Inn Byo and will this year mark the fourth edition.
d. The Commander ZNA Charities Soccer Shield. This is an invitational soccer tournament comprising selected teams from the PSL. The tournament is organised in conjunction with ZIFAand the PSLand this year marked its sixth edition. The Soccer T ournament affords the members of the public an opportunity to contribute directly to the ZNA Charities cause by attending the organised matches. The winners of the previous tournaments include:
a. Caps United FC-2013.
b. FC Platinum- 2014.
c. Highlanders FC-2015.
d. Highlanders FC- 2016.
e. Caps United FC-2017.
f. Dynamos FC – 2018
Fundraising is a continuous activity. Donors and well wishers may send donations in cash or kind to Zimbabwe National Army Charities.
